The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a canoe camper's paradise. This 92-mile corridor of lakes and river connects several large public reserved land units and is surrounded by a vast, privately-owned commercial forest. The area is also used extensively in the winter for ice fishing and snowmobiling even though there are no groomed trails.

Hiking on nearby Quaggy Jo Mountain and trout fishing on Echo Lake are popular local activities. Campsites, a bathhouse, and a beach with a lifeguard are provided in season. Groomed cross-country ski trails are available in the winter. Groomed snowmobile trails also cross through the park.

Baxter State Park, a wilderness area of 202,064 acres, was a gift to the State of Maine by former Gov. Percival P. Baxter. There are 46 mountain peaks and ridges, 18 of which exceed an elevation of 3,000 feet, the highest being Baxter Peak at 5,267 feet. The park is intersected by about 175 miles of trails. The information contained in this brief introduction to the Park is not adequate for extended hiking or climbing. For your own safety, do not leave the Park Tote road without a detailed map of the area to be traversed. Maps may be obtained at Campgrounds, Millinocket Headquarters, or the Visitor Center at Togue Pond. There are ten campgrounds located at Roaring Brook, Abol, Katahdin Stream, Nesowadnehunk, South Branch Pond Trout Brook Farm, Chimney Pond, Russell Pond, Daicey Pond (cabins only) and Kidney Pond (cabins only).

3,112 acres; Several hiking trails extend through this spectacular, scenic area at the end of the Mahoosuc Range. The 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail passes through the park on the way to the trail's northern terminus, Mt. Katahdin. Sights include: Screw Auger Falls, Spruce Meadow, Mother Walker Falls, Old Speck Mountain, and Moose Cave. Facilities include picnic tables and grills. A main artery snowmobile trail (ITS 82) traverses the park and is maintained by a local snowmobile club.

The nearby Center Hill Area provides a scenic picnic spot and nature trail as well as an extensive multiple use trail open to ATVs, horses, walkers, and mountain bikes. Mt. Blue is also a popular day hike. A naturalist leads scheduled hikes and programs during the summer months. Adirondack shelters are available for large group use, and canoes may be rented. The park maintains cross-country ski trails, a major snowmobile trail, and an ice rink during the winter.

691 acres. Located in an area famous for trout and landlocked salmon fishing, the park offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the state in this region of mountains and lakes. Visitors will find well-spaced campsites among the fragrant spruce and fir trees, hot showers, and a concrete boat launching ramp with floats. A major snowmobile trail is maintained into the park by the town of Rangeley and connects to local trails as well as to ITS 89.

766 acres include nearly a mile and a half of sand beaches, dunes, marshes, ledges, and ocean, plus a warm saltwater pond for swimming, making Reid one of Maine's most popular saltwater parks. The clear water of Sebago Lake provides Portland's water supply and supports a high quality freshwater sport fishery for salmon and togue. Songo Lock is nearby and permits a boat trip up the Songo River to Long Lake.

Travel south on Route 236 out of South Berwick. After about 1/2-mile, turn right opposite the junior high school on to Vine Street. Go about one mile to the intersection of Vine Street and Old Fields Road. Turn right and watch for the Vaughan Woods entrance on the right.
250-acre forested tract along the scenic Salmon Falls River offers picnic facilities and hiking trails through old growth stands of pine and hemlock.
